Show FINE FOREST SERIOUSLY MENACED 1 he existence of the western white and sugar pine forests is threatened. Under western conditions a financially practicable method of local control has been worked out which will save the eastern white pine in the areas of its greatest commercial value, but whetner these methods can be adapted to western condtions remains to be demonstrated. During the past four years, in cooperation with the Northwestern North-western and Lake states, a total of 1,025,394 acres has been cleared or currant and gooseberry bushes, at an average cost of 35 cent3 per acre, thus protecting the white pine on this area and making it ssfe for the future production of this valuable crop . Cooperative insect control on a large scale is at present being undertaken on Federal, State and private lands on the Pacific coast and Rocky Mountain forests where the cost of bringing the western pine Lettle under control will be less than $1 50,000. During the past ten years the stumpage value of the trees this i .sect has killed runs into many millions of dollars. One of the l-irr'est projects in the country is in south-central Oregon, in the vicinity of Klarnath Falls. |
