Show Road Program Will Be Carried Out Notwithstanding the fact that a concerted effort was made by "someone" "some-one" to have the workof building the hard-surfaced road on the Pigeon Hollow-Manti project, some 1,000 citizens of the county last Saturday frustrated the movement by voting almost unanimously to continue the work as had already been arranged for. Not for some time has a more enthusiastic meeting of the county citizens been held and the Manti theater the-ater was crowded to standing room when the convention was called to order, with Judge A. H. Christensen as chairman and A. W. Thompson as secretary. The mass convention was called Lor the purpose of considering the proposition of postponing the work on the road, the meeting being called by the county commissioners. Practically Prac-tically every town and district was represented, and practicajly every town and precinct sent delegations to oppose any delay of the road program. pro-gram. After a motion by Commissioner Commis-sioner P. P. Dyreng "that construction construc-tion on the Manti-Pigeon Hollow-road Hollow-road be suspended for one year," there was several hours of discussion, principally against the motion of the Manti commissioner. The motion got a second by James Meryck of Mt. Pleasant. The principal points brought out in the discussion were that bonds had been voted bythe taxpayers of Sanpete county for the construction of this highway; that the bonds had been sold and the contract let; that the contractor had begun work; that if the contractor was to be bought off and not allowed to complete the work his price would be in the neighborhood neighbor-hood of $100,000, which would have to be borne entirely by the county. When the final vote was taken on the question it was practically voted unanimously to proceed with the work and to impress the county and state officials of the sincerity of the taxpayers of the county, County At-Jtorney At-Jtorney J. A. Hougaard moved and it was unanimously adopted "that the convention instruct the county commissioners com-missioners to demand that the state proceed with the construction of the road. At the opening of the convention an effort was made by several to find out exactly who was responsible for starting the movement to defer the work, but without success. The commissioners com-missioners charge the state officials while others lay it at the hands of the commissioners. |
