Show Pioneer W oman Is Called to. Reward Ellen Chrislenson. a resident of Gunnison for the past fifty years, ami perhaps one of the best and most favorably fa-vorably known characters in southern south-ern Utah, suffered a stroke of apo-plery apo-plery at her home here August 11. and twelve hours later she answered the final summons to the Great Beyond. Be-yond. Mrs. Christensen was enjoying he very best of health and late Saturday Satur-day evening did some shopping preparatory pre-paratory for her Sunday dinner. Upon her return from the market, she was stricken, and when found by her daughter, Mrs. Ellen Hofheins, was in a semi-conscious state. Medical aid was summoned, but the aged woman was beyond help and just twelve hours after she was stricken she passed away. Mrs. Christensen was 72 years old, having celebrated her anniversary on the 15th of July last. She was born in Sheffield, England, and when a very' young girl came to the United States with her parents, first settling in Cincinnati, Ohio. At the age of 9 years she came to Utah, being a member mem-ber of the handcart brigade that crossed the plains in 185G. She spent practically all of her life in the Gunnison Gun-nison valley, passing through the hardships and trials that were encountered en-countered by the early pioneers during dur-ing the Indian troubles. The deceased, though advanced in years, was always cheerful, and her friends were numbered by the hundreds. hun-dreds. Besides her seven living children, chil-dren, twenty-four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, she leaves a host of warm friends to mourn her death. Impressive funeral services were held at the Presbyterian chapel Tuesday, Tues-day, August 17. Rev. Russell Woltz. pastor of the church, was the principal princi-pal speaker. Austin Kearns assisted in the services. Miss Virginia Peterson Peter-son rendered two solos and a selected choir gave a number of selections. Following the church services the body was taken to the Gunnison cemetery cem-etery for final interment. |
