Show GOMPERS OUTLIHES ; LABORPROGRAM CHIEF URGES WORK I NG M AN TO BE NONPARTISAN IN POLITICS. Laments Failure to Ratify League of Nations, and Expresses Fear That Question Will Be Submerged During Campaign. Montreal. Organized labor of the United States was appealed to by Samuel Gompers of the American Federation of Labor on June 14 to support sup-port the federation's nonpartisan political poli-tical program and to urge on congress adoption of the league of nations. Characterizing the failure of the United States to ratify the covenant as "pitiable," Mr. Gomper stold tlie annual convention that "if the Question Ques-tion was submitted to the people, without with-out any other entangling problems, I am positive that the people of our country would say by an overwhelming overwhelm-ing vote it desires the league of nations." na-tions." lie expressed the fear that in the political campaign the league of nations na-tions question will be "submerged in the number of questions which must attract the attention of the people." "It is regrettable," he added, "that the question in itself has not had an opportunity to be presented for the consideration and determination of the people." Mr. Gompers asserted that his nonpartisan non-partisan political program "may be in concrete form before the convention" within the next few days. "Forty years of experience, of success suc-cess and triumph," said he, "has shown us the way. Demands which labor makes are for services which labor performs and gives to society and without which such progress would be impossible and civilization would come to a standstill. Labor makes demands for a better and higher life." |
