Show FOREST STREET. The Urtmtliuf the Treei Iktarded by Hard Soil, Lack of Water, etc. Forest street is without doubt the prettiest boulevard in the Territory. It is unusually broad, with gravelly, mud less road bed. On either side are two long avenues of beautiful trees leading irom me uepot up w town, dui, we are sorry to say. those trees are not growing as rapidly and luxuriously luxur-iously as they ought. The earth about their trunks has packed down hard as pavement, hampering the proper growth and spread of the roots; the little irrigating streams : thus go gurgling by with a rush, failing to leave the necessary moisture in the ground. Consequently Con-sequently the growth of the trees has been rather slow and unhealthy. Compare the size of those trees which are planted in good, loose soil, on the banks of streams, ; where they have plenty of water, with those less favorably located and you will appreciate the need of water and cultivation. Another severe check to these trees is the using of them for hitching posts. Hardly a tree can be found on the outside rows from the City Drug Store two blocks west, and also near the railway station, that is not skinned or barked in a shameful manner. All these matterB should be looked after. We spoke of them last summer, and during the last few days several people have also mentioned them to us. The City Council might take the matter in hand with good results. |
