Show TIIK l'AHM DEVELOPER No cause has contributed so directly di-rectly to the development of the small. farm, with its resulting prosperity pros-perity to the farmers, than has the canning industry. A few years ago, in the height of the season, it was practically impossible impos-sible for farmers to dispose of their vegetable, berry, and fruit crops at any kind of a figure. These crops were simply a drug on the market, as they could not be consumed in thelt fresh form as rapidly as produced. The growth of the canning industry, with its advertising campaigns, intro-ulucing intro-ulucing canned fruits and vegetables in all parts of the world, has changed all this, and today, under ordinary conditions, the local cannery can consume con-sume practically all vegetables and fruit in the busiest season of the year and pay the farmers a price which enables them to develop farms and make a good living from small tracts of land. In our scheme of farm development, develop-ment, let us not overlook the canneries can-neries and vegetable and fruit packing pack-ing plants. Thus far Gunnison valley val-ley has no canneries, but there is a splendid opening for one here. |
