Within twelve days after the awful catastrophe in Hondo, " the largest island of the Japanese empire, when earthquake 4- and fire caused death and destruction, the United States had . raised five millions of dollars to aid the stricken people of : i ' that nation. i : The task of soliciting subscriptions for aid was assigned j I to the American Red Cross. j : In Gunnison one hundred dollars were subscribed and forwarded to the central committee. I Although the local Red Cross chapter had been in- i- 1 . ! active for a number of months due to the fact that no emerg- ! ency had arisen for active effort, the earthquake in Japan J; afforded an excellent opportunity to be of real service again, . ' and temporary officers were installed as follows: Mrs. Ellen Hofheins, chairman; Mrs. Ira Overfelt, treasurer; Mrs. N. ,L. Hermansen, secretary. A public meeting has been called for the evening of September 17th next Monday when a permanent organ- ization will be effected. A president, secretary and treasur- .
