Show REASONABLE PROTECTION NEEDED. In the arguments against the sugar tariff, the assertion is made that little more than one-fifth of America's sugar requirements is supplied sup-plied by the domestic industry. Granting that this proportion is right, American beet sugar is an important factor in preventing the United States from being solely dependent of foreign supplies to fill its sugar requirements. It would indeed be poor policy to allow foreign sugar producers ' .vho employ the cheapest kind of labor, to have free access to oui markets on a basis that would wipe out the American sugar industry. A reasonable sugar tax which protects the American industry and which allows foreign growers to supply four-fifths of our requirements require-ments is certainly not calculated to discourage foreign competition. The mere fact that America is producing its own sugar acts as a stabilizing influence which holds down the price and saves the American Amer-ican people many more millions of dollars than the sugar tax ever amounts to. Incidentallly this tariff on sugar saves the public just that much taxes which it. would otherwise be forced to raise for the needs of our national government. Hence the sugar tariff suppliesthe needed revenue to our country coun-try on the one hand, and encourages the development of our sugar industry on the other. |
