Pretty Sounding Flute, a young Sioux in a government school, was given this text to turn into similar language expressing the same thought: "Tha spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." The teacher's explanation, explana-tion, she believed had beei elaborate. Pretty Sounding Flute had seemed all attention. After laboring half an hour he walked up to the teacher's desk and proudly deposited his paper, which bore the startling legend: "The ghost is sure agreeable, but the meat is rotten."
