Show I IJIVGRSITY OF UTAH. j ! As lias been announced through j J advertisements in our columns, the 1 University of Utah resumes its ! sessions for the year on the 19lh inst, the first few days being devoted de-voted to the examination and classification of applicants, after which the regulur dail routine of instruction will begin. But a few months ago, the outlook out-look for the University was not entirely en-tirely promising as the usual biennial bien-nial appropriation for university maintenance was greatly reduced by the iaet territorial legislature;but thanks to a number of fortuitous .'conditions, the present prospects for the institution's prosperity are brighter than ever. It will be remembered that the Salt Lake Literary and Scientific Association, endowed one of the chairs in the University in the sum of $60,000, one-fourth of which amount appears in a superb collection of new scientific appa- ratus. A large and commodious new building, excellently adapted for laboratory work has been fitted in the most approved style for the physical science classes, and additional addi-tional rooms in the main building have been prepared for the work-in work-in natural science and the literary courses. The University, occupying as it does a field of its own, is not engaged in rivalry or hurtful competition com-petition with any other educational institution or system: it views with great favor the strengthening of district and liigh schools, for upon the material furnished by those institutions, in-stitutions, the University depends for its support. For the present a Preparatory school is maintained in connection with the institution, receiving students who have not enjoyed the special facilities of high school training. TI142 Territorial Normal School comprises a throe years course, and a more extended university uni-versity course; the former leading on graduation to a certificate authorizing the holder to Leach for a term of years without examination examina-tion by local authority; and the full course leading to the rank of a degree, with perpetual exemption from examination as to scholarship. scholar-ship. The regular courses in Liberal Arts, Science and Letters compare favorably with similar courses offered of-fered in any institution of similar rank. We recommend the University Uni-versity of Utah to the increased favor of the people. The institution institu-tion is ours, and we have good reason rea-son to be proud cf the possession; may its value ever increase among us. |
