Show ERl-QNAL TRIUMPH. It is suggestive bow many great things for the world have been accomplished accom-plished by individuals either acting alone or nearly so. One or two cases will illustrate this fact. One man, St. Frausis of Assissi, morally regenerated regener-ated Italy. It was Columbus, not a geographical society, that discovered America. It was one man, Gutenberg that discovered printing. So with Dr, Cook. His expedition was not furnished by a government or a scientific society. As compared with expeditions so sent his was poor ly equipped, yet he sucoeeded where they failed, This is no reflection on those expeditions for Dr. Cook undoubtedly un-doubtedly profited by their experience and the data they furnished. But he had the one advantage of having but himself to oonsider in his quest for the pole, There was no conflict of opinion about routes or methods of travel, and this faot with his scientific knowledge, indomitable pereeverence and courage, and favoring circumstances, circum-stances, enabled him to reach the pole and plant upon it the American flag. |
