Cook, who still persists in her refusal to be interviewed directly or to make any signed statement for publication on her husband's report that he reached the pole ahead of Commander Peary, consented Saturday, through a friend whose name is withheld, to account ac-count for her silence. "I believe in my husband," she said, "and there the matter ends for me. I do not belong in this controversy, and T have feared that if I talked at all, no matter how guardedly, I should be' dragged into it willy-nilly. Then there would he denials and counter-denials, counter-denials, and I should never get clear.
