Show LIGHT EARTHQUAKE SHOCKS FELT IN SOUTHERN SPAIN Walls of a Few Houses Cracked and Inhabitants Panic Stricken, But No Serious Damage Done. Madrid. All communication with southern Spain and with the city of Barcelona is uninterrupted, and the reports emanating from England relative rela-tive to a disastrous earthquake and tidal wave are untrue. There was a slight earthquake shock at Totona, in the province of Murcia, on January 29, but no serious damage was done. The walls of only a few houses were cracked. Slight shocks were also felt in the village of Olias. At both Totona and Olias the Inhabitants Inhab-itants fled panic-stricken to the suburbs, fearing that a disaster was upon them such as devastated Sicily and southern Italy. It is reported that the moment the earthquake occurred the sun was hidden hid-den by a dense gray cloud, which, however, disappeared immediately, while a shower of hailstones as large as walnuts covered the ground to a depth of several centimeters. The reports of a tidal wave probably prob-ably are based on dispatches that have been received from the Catalo-nion Catalo-nion coast during the past fornight or so to that effect that little by little the sea "was encroaching on the land. Up to the present time the damage from this has been insignificant. |
