Show INDEPENDENCE OF CUBA. American Control of Insular Affairs at an End. Havana. Jose Miguel Gomez was Inaugurated president of the re-established Cuban republic at a few minutes min-utes after noon on Thursday, and the American control of insular affairs came to an end with the departure of former Governor Magoon and all the provisional officials. The Americans left the harbor on warships and transports immediately after the forma! turning over of the government to the native officials. An immense crowd stood with bared heads in the Plaza de Armsa, facing the palace, when President Gomez Go-mez stepped out on the palace balcony bal-cony and took the oath of office from the chief justice of the supreme court. The president was surrounded by the dignitaries of state and the members of the diplomatic corps, and the special spe-cial envoys in brilliant uniforms. A message expressing hope for Cuba's success was received by the president and congress of the Cuban republic from President Roosevelt. |
