Show SAN FRANCISCO AGAIN SHAKEN UP i TyO EARTHQUAKE SHOCKS CAUSE PANIC AMONG THE RESIDENTS. But Slight Damage Done to Buildings, Build-ings, Which Were Soon Depopulated Depopulat-ed When Tremons Began One Man Falls Dead From Fright. San Francisco. On. Saturday this city was visited by two of the heaviest heav-iest earthquake shocks since the big quake of 1906, and for a time many of the residents feared that there was to be a repetition of that terrible ter-rible catastrophe which resulted in a heavy loss of life and the partial destruction de-struction of the city. ' The shocks jarred the central portion por-tion of California and western Nevada. Ne-vada. The first shock came at 2 o'clock, and was followed in a few seconds by one of similar intensity, sach lasting about five seconds. It was felt to the northward of Sacramento, in the Sacramento valley; val-ley; as far southward as Fresno, and to the east at Carson and Reno, Nev., the former place experiencing the heaviest shock in its history. Only trivial damage has been reported re-ported from any section, but in San Francisco and other cities in the affected, af-fected, area panic seized upon crowds in stores and restaurants and there was a pell-mell exodus from the large buildings Some slight damage was done to buildings in San Francisco Heavy stones in the cornice of the Mechanics' Mechan-ics' bank building were moved slightly slight-ly out of alignment; superficial cracks were made in large office buildings; cornices of the new post-office post-office building were disarranged, and minor damage was done to the interior in-terior walls of a number of other buildings Within a few seconds after the first shock, many downtown buildings we,re depopulated in a rush to the streets. Telephonic and telegraphic service was suspended because of operators deserting their keys. Herbert Her-bert Hadley, a lodging house inmate, fell dead of fright and some cases of hysteria or of cuts or bruises suffered suf-fered in the semi-panic were treated at the emergency and other hospitals. |
