Show Independence Day Observed. The oommittee of ladies who took in hand the arranging of a celebration celebra-tion on tha Fourth Buoceeded admirably-in their effort, and the doings were a gratification to all. . Early in the morning came a- few salutes and this demonstration was followed by a spirited serenadeJ from I the band, until 8 o'clock. Assembling at the opera house the citizens' were treated to a patriotio program of exercises, Rev. Charles H, Hamilton delivering the oration. Mrs. August Villard read the Declaration Declar-ation of Independence, the local glee club and the brass- band gave the musical offering, and recitation numbers num-bers were furnished by Miss Ruth Perkins and Miss Vera Edwards. A fitting close was the singing of "America," by the audience. Mayor Knighton read off the program pro-gram and Bishop Joseph Christen-Bon. Christen-Bon. acted as Chaplain. At 2 o'clock the children were treated treat-ed to a free dance, followed by outdoor out-door attractions. Later an impromptu game of baseball base-ball was played at the city park, sides being taken by the married and single men. Honors fell by a good score to the singles . A crowded dance finished the celebration. cele-bration. The hall was nicely decorated decor-ated for the occasion and a few of the business places,. notably bo Gunnison Cash store, Gunnison Valley Meat & Grocery store, the Gribble house and the drug store building, were holiday attired. |
