Show CANNON WILL HANDLE GAVEL ANOTHER TERM "Uncle Joe" Selected for the Fourth Time as Speaker of the House of Representatives. Washington. For the fourth time the honor of presiding over the national na-tional house of representatives has come to Joseph G. Cannon of Illinois, Illi-nois, "Uncle Joe" having been selected select-ed as speaker of the house at a caucus cau-cus held Saturday night, March 13. The vote for Cannon as candidate for speaker was not unanimous. Out of 186 votes cast Mr. Cannon received 162. Mr. Cannon did not vote, and Mr. Sturgiss of West Virginia arrived too late for the roll call. Following JOSEPH G. CANNON. the nomination of Mr. Cannon, Mr. Steenerson of Minnesota named Mr Tawney for speaker. Mr. Reeder ot Kansas placed in nomination Mr. Smith of Iowa, and Mr. Howland of Ohio named Mr. Keifer. The roll call resulted: Cannon, 162; Smith, 10; Tawney, 7; Keifer, 5; Representative Crum-packer Crum-packer of Indiana, 1, and Representative Representa-tive Maguire of Oklahoma, 1. |
