Show Senate Against Free Lumber. Washington. The lumber schedule of the tariff was under consideration almost the entire day on Monday, with Senators Root, Heyburn, Borah and Dolliver contending on the one hand for protection, and Senators Clapp, Burkett and McCumber arguing argu-ing as strenuously against the policy. The day closed with more than a two-thirds vote against Senator Mc-Cumber's Mc-Cumber's free lumber amendment, the ballot showing 25 for and 5CJ against. The surprise of the day was the attitude at-titude of Senator Dolliver, who heretofore here-tofore had stood with! the "progress sives" throughout the fight. 1 He took positive position against the radical demand for free fumber. |
