Show OBQOHR I want to see the government save money; I'm patriotic, too, you understand; I want to see the future bright and sunny All over this, my own native land, But though it smack of infamy or treason trea-son And call the standing army Into camps, I here arise and ask to know the reason They're putting stickless gum upon our stamps! I'm always first to show up in attendance At meetings where our country is the toast; The declaration of our independence Is something that I love to read the most, But, hang it all, whene'er I mail a letter The stamp wfll never stick, it only damps! Bring on the gyve, the shackle and the fetter, But why that stickless gum upon our stamps? I'm ready, too, to rise when Duty calls me But if. instead of using speech, she wrote, The thought of what would happen then appalls me. I know I never should receive her note. If this be treason, make the most of It, sirs, And nab me for a base, perfidious scamp, But meanwhile won't you put a little bit, sirs, ' Of decent mucilage upon a stamp? The gum you us i tiiin and weak and doless, It's tasteless, ptiateless, hopeless for the task; It's worthless, useless, spiritless and goo-less; goo-less; You couldn't stick a stamp on with a cask! We lick a stamp and bootlessly we whack it, To make it stay we have to use wire clamps. Hang deficits! Go buy some glue to back it And use no more cold tea to gum the stamps! |
