Severe Storm on Mississippi. St. Louis. A series of windstorms J of cyclonic proportions struck St. Louis and vicinity on Monday, causing caus-ing considerable property damage, injuring in-juring a few persons and imperiling the lives of 300 passengers of the excursion ex-cursion steamer Alton in the Missis-! Missis-! sippi river. The heaviest storm was at Alton, 111., and it was there that the passenger steamer was buffeted by the wind. Finding that, his boat could not make headway toward the regular wharf, the captain headed it across the river in an attempt to effect ef-fect a landing on the Missouri side.
