One hundred years ago Louis XVIII, his long exile in England at an end, had crossed the diiannel, landed at Calais and was now on his way to Taris to ascend the throne just vacated va-cated by Napoleon. The people everywhere every-where hailed the king's progress with manifestations of pleasure. Many who had occupied high positions in the service of Napoleon and who had profited much by his patronage now joined the populace in loudly acclaiming acclaim-ing the new sovereign.
