Show highlights past post and present mrs amanda curtis Is long time resident and forgeable un person in green rivers colorful history by janet howland people sometimes go through a life lifetime time and can never say they have met a most unforgettable able per of green river con on however people have the opportunity of knowing and associating with a most inspiring woman t am sure those who know mrs amanda amand a curtis will know that she is such a person A woman who has had a very full and eventfully event full life a life of doing for others of helping when help is needed to give you an idea of her outstanding aid to the community and individuals here are a few details of her life her story starts many years ago when she was a young girl miss amanda watson her mother died leaving two younger sisters and one brother to care for and raise one of whom is mrs hunt in 1903 miss amanda watson mar ned ried mr wallace curtis in aurora utah and remained there until 1915 and during this time seven children were born in the year 1915 they moved to cainsville Cains ville utah and lived there approximately three years another child was born to them while in Cains ville then in 1919 they moved to green river where their two yr youngest agest children were born upon making their home in green river mrs curtis became very ac ive in bringing a branch of the church to the community at times she even entertained in her home for the purpose of raising money for the chunch supplies when the relief society was first organized in green river she was made counselor and in 1942 was sustained as president she has held hat that office for the past 13 years but his this year is retiring from her office she was was president of the P T A for or one year and during that time she helped organize the childrens clinic in the school which we still have throughout the years she has been very active in club and has held the office of vice pres ident at the present time mrs curtis is the home service chairman for the american red cross and the health officer for green river one of her duties as health officer is to send in a report every week stating the number of illnesses in our comman ity now ym would think that most people with so many activities to keep them busy wouldn t have time for much else other than raising their family now our mrs curtis has been both doctor and nurse to the townspeople from the time she arrived in green river some 36 years ago through her practical tica nursing experience she has treated everything franj a nose bleed to scarlet fever ant and has delivered over 50 babies ta this community her home has been open to the sick at all times tunes the times when people have come rapping on an her door in the middle of 0 the night for help are to numerous to count when needed she has dropped what she was aping to the sick to the hospital in price she has gone into homes to care for the sick and after doing so has cooked cleaned house and taken their laundry home to wash and iron when green river celebrated the utah centennial mrs curtis was going to attend the dance and call for the quadrille her cost me for the dance was a dress worn in the gay nineties and as she was leaving her house a fellow droe up and asker her to please come and take care of his wife as she was ready to have her baby without changing mrs curtis hastened to the woman and after both mother and child were taken care of she returned to the dance just in time for the quadrille not only have the townspeople benefited from mrs curtiss curtis s help also the tourists passing through one incident was a banker and his family from oregon who were tra through green river when his wife became ill and he took her to mrs curtis for help she was quite ill and remained in the curtis home for a night and a day and was ahn able to continue on her trip later mrs curtis received a letter from the gentleman thanking her for the wonderful care she had given his wife if you were to cc ecat jit the number of calls to her home for a period of days her average would be 3 each day with a high of 17 patients in one day two years ago mr and mrs cur celebrated their golden wedding anniversary and besides her own family that attended the local towns people were present to show their appreciation to her I 1 have written just a few details from mrs curtis s life but if all her good deeds were compiled into one writing it would require book leng th I 1 have met many people in my life and I 1 for one have never met a more inspiring and unforgettable able person as mrs curtis |
