Show THE NINE-MILE EXTENSION. The Little Canal ! Gout 15,000 and Water 15 OOO Acres of Land. "The work on the nine-mile western arm of the Bear River Canal is progressing finely," said Contractor Carl Jensen, in conversation conver-sation with a Bugler reporter this week. About 70 teams and 110 men have been constantly at work since the middle of October, when the work was begun. Had not the late frosts interfered, the entire nine miles, excepting the rock work, would have been completed and ready for water next week. This rock work is found rounding Point Lookout and is 1,200 feet in length. Some 500 feet, nearly one-half, one-half, of this slow, difficult work are already completed. This nine-mile nine-mile extension leaves the Corinne canal at the drop head gates, three-quarters three-quarters of a mile east of Point Lookout; runs west and north, swinging round one of the richest little valleys to be found in Northern North-ern Utah. Including flats, swamps and extensive plains of rich, loamy soil, the new western branch will water full 15,000 acres of land. The water will be turned in next April. The Bear River Canal Co. is disposing dis-posing of considerable of this land already at a fair price, guaranteeing guarantee-ing a perpetual water right at a moderate figure. The new canal will cost the company at least calculation, cal-culation, $15,000. But thisisonlya drop in the bucket when compared with the $2,000,000 expended on the main canal. Men who will lay out such vast sums to develop a new country, certainly deserve support, sup-port, patronage and encouragement of the most liberal nature. We fear the people of Box Elder county hardly appreciate the great mark this gigantic canal project will yet cut in the history of our county. |
