Show That Boycott THAT Mrs. Whitehouse of New York is a born generalissimo. She 'has dropped on a great military idea that one of the most effective ways to subdue an enemy is to cut off his supplies. She proposes a boycott of a day, when every woman shall remain in her home and show that I brute man what a helpless creature he would be without woman. 1 It would be a lesson to him sure enough. No hash for breakfast; when he wanted to telephone ! have nothing, feel nothing except that the last I syllable had been lost from the "hello." When his day's mall is looked over, no stenograpner to prepare pre-pare his correspondence; the life and soul sud-"denly sud-"denly gon? out of the roof garden entertainment; all the color gone from the streets; no dinner save the remnants of the previous day served cold; no breakfast ordered for the next morning; no trail of women's robes to sanctify the streets; neither early morning mass nor evening vespers; the children all unwashed and unkempt the startling beginning of early decay which continued contin-ued would end the race in a single generation; a summons to mankind 'that justice must be done, or no more hash; no more smiles; no more babies. But could the ladies stand it? We know that "the bravest battles ever fought have Deen fought 8'Stoy the mothers of men," but there are hosts of women who have not yet been mothers. Could they remain at home all day? What of the new gown that was finished yesterday? What of the millinery and dry goods Btores? What of the ice cream! What of the "nice cold ibottle and the red-hot red-hot bird!" What of the daily exchange of gossip; what of all that might happen and they not see it! What of the young men watching on the corners cor-ners for certain hats, parasols and slippers; and then will coirje to men the words of the melancholy melan-choly Dane, "whether 'tis better," etc. The world is strangely perturbed this year, "the sea and the waves roaring, men's hearts failing fail-ing them for fear," the women raising hades and chaos not sixteen days away. |
