But, latent within his soul, a wild-beast always had its lair, and when aroused the man was transformed. And then, we think, the ancient belief that man was helpless, that from the cradle to the grave a Fate led him which he was unable to struggle against, had never a more perfect representation than in the life and the death of David S.
