Show H With 'one of the most important municipal H elections in the history of the city less than H eighty days away, Salt Lakers are being treated H to an exhibition of shyness and personal modesty H In the matter of announced candidacies for mayor H and commissioners under the new commission H Plan of government passed by the last legisla- j ture for Salt Lake's particular benefit, that would H be hard to equal. H Why the reluctance, gentlemen? H Certainly the fence builders have not been H idl and their activities together with those of H certain officials of local public service corpora- H tions who seem to enjoy supplying their favorite H' councilmen with everything from cigars to auto-H auto-H mobiles, are subjects of interesting speculation H t0 those who are watching the preparations for H the coming conflict. Hi With the exception of a few gentlemen who H have been mentioned for commissioners the H coterie of politicians who are flitting about the H flame of candidacy announcements just now H, contain hardly the material the average tax- H payer would care to see invested with the power H that goes with a commissioner's job under the H new plan which goes into effect here after next V November. H It was reported for some time that one in par- m ticular of the councilmanic proteges of a promin- B ent public service company official was an avowed m candidate for commissioner and though the re- H Port found little credence, it is not too late, per- IH baps, to hope that the councilman will not .U- M tempt anything so surely futile and unwise. H The campaign, though it will break in the H open rather later from all indications, promises m to be one of the warmest affairs of the past six H years. If a good, strong, clean ticket is put in H the field by the American party, there is little K the Americans need fear. |
