Show I Nicaragua has arrested and imprisoned an American citizen on the charge of violating a revenue law of that state. The firm to which the prisoner belongs has sent a lawyer to defend him and the United States government has sent, by special steamer, an agent to watch the trial. This last fact may insure the man a fair trial, but that is the only assurance, for Nicaragua officials aire born thieves and are as merciless as so many alligators. It is a great pity that Diaz of Mexico does not take it into his head to annex all Central America. Not one of those states is fit for more than subordinate self-government, not fit to deal with foreign governments; there should be a national government ever them all, and the Mexican Mexi-can government should take them in. |
