Show Those Unfortunate Russian Jews. At frequent intervals we read of the massacre massa-cre of Armenians by Turks and deplore the fact that in the nature of things, nothing less than a war of conquest upon Turkey can stop the awful crimes-. But truth Is truth and it is only fair to say that the unspeakable Mohammedan Turk is not a whit worse than the unspeakable Christian Russian. There have been a dozen awful massacres mas-sacres of Jews in Russia within the past year and if any redress has been made or even offered, we have seen no account of it. Surely religious hate is the most cruel hate known among men. We know that the Russian government is almost al-most in extremis, the Czar is not sure of his life for a day. He distrusts the loyalty of his navy and there are only a few regiments of his army that he Implicitly trusts; we suspect that ho does not dare attempt to stop the violence or to protect pro-tect the Jews. But tho strong Christian powers of Europe could and should Interpose. It seems to us that the just thing to do, noting not-ing tho insatiable hate that exists in Russia against the Jews, would be for the government to nppralso the fixed property of the Jows and buy. it, issuing bonds in payment. Those bonds would serve as collaterals on which to raise the needed money to remove the Jows to some new land. Some one might ask, "Where is there any land to which such a host could emigrate? We cannot answer where the best place would be, but thero are plenty of places. We think they might And a home in Central Africa where the land is good and where the products of tho soil would be just what the world wants. We think Great Britain would welcome their settlement in that region. We speak of it be-cause be-cause .it is but a few days' travel by sea and rail from Russian southern ports. We think that in . Tk western Texas and in the northeast states of 'H Mexico homes for all of them might be secured.-The secured.-The same could be dono in southern Brazil and Argentine. It is too early for a wholesale eml- gratlon to the Holy Land; they would fare as badly there as in Russia. jH Wo think there should be a concerted move- fl ment among the wealthy Jews of Great Britain fl and the United States to put some project on H foot through which to save from murder and H property confiscation their race In Russia. An appeal to southern Europe would be useless, for jH the same furious hate exists there. It was that ifl more than aught else that caused the fury against :fl Dreyfus. It is only in the lands of the Anglo Saxon that the Jew can find rest. But the.proph- :fl esles ought to be about exhausted against the Jew fl and the day of his peace ought to begin to dawn. It is hard to think that the world Is progressing fl when such atrocities as thoso reported from Po- H land exists, without kindling especial horror and 'I provoking no retribution. But it Is not a question H to moralize over; tho thing needed is to devise fl some plan to prevent tho constant repetition of fl those horrors. We know of no way except through 9 removal and to that humanity should work until It fl Is accomplished. 'fl |
