Show I! MR. SMOOT. I If Reed Smoot were anything but an utterly vain and selfish person, and if he had sufficient dignity , for either an apostleship or a senator-ship, senator-ship, he would long ago have voluntarily rid the senate, of his brazen and unwelcome presence. But the pompous bulldozer from the Provo pastures pas-tures has no disposition to extinguish any of the hostile calciums that are blazing upon himt and it looks as if, when he is thrown out of the senate, !,' the job will have to be performed with a steam 1 shovel. : Mr. Smoot, in maintaining his senate seat, stands exultingly upon the ruins of the Republican Republi-can party of this state. For the crushing of that t party's power in the city and state he is solely responsible; though it is the party which dishonored dis-honored itself by honoring him with a United States senatorship. If Mr. Smoot would grace- fully retire, the party here might be capable of regeneration, and might resume its old dignified , and commanding place. If he does not relinquish his seat, or is not forcibly ejected, the Republican J party, in this county at least, may as well disband the moment news is received of his indefinite , tenure in office. This is acutely realized by every i leader in the organization. Even a large coterie 1 1 of his Mormon Republican friends are as strenu ous in desiring his removal as the most irascible Mormon fighter. If Mr. Smoot does not believe j this, let him put his faithful sleuths, Fussy Ander- j son and E. H. Callister, to work, and if they make j a faithful report, he will be made fully cognizant of this disaffection among his former supporters. This being true, if Reed Smoot had any patriotism pa-triotism or gratitude, political honesty or concern I for those who have signally honored him and i whose political future is threatened on his account, he would step voluntarily out of the senate cham-j cham-j ber. ' Mr. Smoot has brought untold sufferings upon his own people, he has listened unheeding to the ' sobs of Mormon widows, he has bowed the gray heads of the aged leaders of his church in shame. Had there been any loyalty or reverence for the religion of himself and his fathers, or the people peo-ple of whom he professes to be a guardian, he would long ago have resigned. At the recent annual banquet at the Commercial Commer-cial club, Reed Smoot shocked and amazed everyone every-one present by relating an indecent and vulgar story. He did this in the presence of the aged and venerable President John R. Winder of the Mormon church, whose humiliation may be easily imagined. Mr. Smoot is the diminutive type of man who thinks sagacity consists of scampering alternately with the hounds and hares. The Commercial Com-mercial club incident shows that, as an apostle, Reed Smoot is a travesty; and equally conclusively conclu-sively that a man of such caliber should never have been inflicted upon the great United States Senate. It shows that Reed Smoot, apostle, senator, sena-tor, by reason of lack of culture, and ignorance of all the amenities of civilized society, is unfitted for association with gentlemen of refinement. Reed Smoot is uncouth, unlettered, bigoted, disloyal and ignorant. His retention in the United States senate would be a disgrace to the' nation and a humiliation to the state. |
