Show I, RUSSIA'S POSSIBILITIES. I Two good news items come from Russia. One is hat Witte is hopeful and expresses the belief , that out of her despair Russia will rise chastened, 'l but with renewed hope, and be greater than ever; j the other, that new concessions to the peasantry , will be granted to give them better rewards for ! tilling the soil. If vodka could be banished from Russia, if the little red school house could be made to illuminate every cross-road, and compulsory com-pulsory education could be enforced, in twenty-five twenty-five years Russia would be transformed. The field is ample, the stock of the people is sound; ', could one great directing mind, that knows what i should be done, have its way until the new system could be established, the whole face of nature would change in Russia ,and in a single generation the great empire would be the first in power in the old world. |
