Show CARELESS CALIFORNIA FARMERS. The Sah Francisco Chronicle reports the receipt, re-ceipt, last week, in San Francisco of four carloads of eastern poultry. Is not that a ! shameful reproach re-proach upon California? California, with millions mil-lions "of acres of fertile land as yet uncultivated; land, too, where two men could raise the feed for and take care of 1,000 chickens and 500 turkeys. , ' Dressed turkeys in San Francisco are selling at from 21 to 25 cents a pound for a 15-pound turkey, tur-key, say $3.50. Eggs, too, are as high as when the people of that city depended upon the Fara- J Ions islands' seagulls for a supply. We wonder if California farmers will ever get over their improvident im-provident and lazy ways. Stock farms, where there is no milk or butter; farms where all the bacon for the men is bought in the cities; one hundred half -broken mustangs, and not a reliable horse on the premises we had hoped that old " race had all died off. |
