Show A POSSSIBLE CAUSE. If called upon to give an offhand opinion, without with-out any positive proof being required, we should say that a careful reading of the new franchise and its concessions to existing suburban railroads, has a look as though the fine Italian hand of the Hon. Simon Bamberger got in its work on the less magnetic and less dominating brains of the few needed to pass that franchise. The need of tranquility, the imperative need of Democratic ascendancy in city affairs, and the appalling ap-palling danger of postponing any longer the increase in-crease of the water supply, could furnish the arguments, argu-ments, and it was not necessary to even mention the little matter of a suburban railroad in which someone was, perhaps, interested. It was Napoleon, Na-poleon, we believe, who said: "Men are nothing; a man is everything." |
