Show SKY illuminated ILLUMINAT EV tn BY NIGHT FIRES between friday morning and sunday evening the local tire fire department was called out to live ive fires the one athe friday morning in the alley back of the cash feed fruit companas Comp anys store and the other that afternoon at the home of joseph law being only grass tires fires at which little damage was done the other three tires fires details of 0 which are given in this article wore were ot of considerable proportions and are thought to have been of incendiary origin A large barn jointly owned by alfred olsen of this city and N E mor of salt lake city located au on 3rd ard east street between 3rd ard and ath south streets was burned to the ground friday night the flames broke out at about ten and shot into the air illuminating that section of the city tor for blocks around the flames were tanned fanned by a stiff east breeze and sparks from the burning building were carried to the south west as far as ath south and ath west streets the barn was empty with the exception of some hardware stored there by mr the residence of mr air which is about yards southwest of the barn stood directly in the course of the windswept wind swept flames and caught tire fire in the root of 0 the east wing the quick response of the local lire fire department part ment saved the home but the dry lumber in the barn burned so rapidly that the tire fire was beyond control by the time the department arrived mr r and its mrs A crawford Craw tord and children are living in the house an and d suffered the loss of considerable clothing a washing machine anti and other articles by the fire mr air crawfords Craw tord fords s automobile which stood just west ot of the barn was a iso also burned the total loss by reason ot of the tire fire is estimated at upa upwards ards of 1000 another spectacular blaze occurred sunday night at about ten in a large barn belonging to wm sorensen located on 3rd ard east between nid nd and 3rd ard south streets the tire fire was similar to that in the olson mor barn in that it occurred at about the same time at night the flames shooting into the air and illuminating lumina ting the sky and was also fanned by an last east wind the fire brought out a large crowd of 0 people nearby near by buildings were saved by the efficient work of the fire department but thel the barn was burned to the ground there I 1 was a quantity of lumber in the barn and the total loss Is estimated between an and d those first on the scene attest that they could smell the furnes fumes of kerosene an and d as the fire started from inside the building there is little question but that it was of incendiary origin just as the firemen were reeling the hose after extinguishing the tire fire at the sorensen barn at about 12 0 clock one of the firemen noticed flames leaping into the air in the northeastern part of the city and immediately after th the siren screeched out the alarm the tire fire this time was in a large frame warehouse just south and back of the baron woolen mills main building consisting of a basement and one room above the firemen made a quick run to the scene of the fire but the flames were beyond control and the building and contents were completely destroyed however they were successful in saving the main building the warehouse was wag used conjointly by the baron woolen mills and the john W christenson christensen mattress and bedding company tor for the storage storage of wool and other raw material mr baron estimates his loss in the building and material including order books at about 1000 with no insurance I 1 mr christensen stated that his los would be upwards of 0 with no insurance he had just received A large quantity ot of wool clippings which had not been put in the warehouse but were in boxes outside mr baron stated that the fire had been started at the rear ot of the building in tte the east end ot of the basement which opens out on the creek bank and were of 0 an incendiary nature he and family faintly returned home at about 1030 from an auto ride to park city and everything about the premises was all right at that time |
