Show MATERNITY. By Caroline Reynolds. The sun god veils himself in filmy clouds of mist, The west is hung with flaming tapestries of red; The air is sweet with promises of rain the dusk Is stealing where the sentinels of day have fled. From distant pond there comes the croaking of a frog, Afar there dies the echo of an eveniDg bell. The faint perfume of orange blossoms, the lilacs' jl breath J The fevered fancies of the dreary day dispel. " Among the sighing trees a mocker stirs and trills As if his pulsing throat would burst with joy and love; The sad earth pauses for a moment and is still, The starlight shimmers silver from the sky above. Against the band of light that through a window falls, A mother rocks her babe, and sings as moth ers sing; And in a quiet nook where drowsy roses dream The glad earth holds against her breast the newborn Spring. |
