Show B WHY? B The interest taken by the Tribune to have a B formal protest sent out to the nation against the B state of affairs here as made clear by the testi-B testi-B mony of Joseph F. Smith, has a suspicious look. B That testimony was not news here beyond the ex- B tHcit statement as to the number of his children. B The Tribune understood what was going on just B as well when It sent out a solicitor and obtained B 1.500 Mormon subscribers on the statement that B all would henceforth be lovely and that the Trib-B Trib-B une was going to advocate the election of Reed B Smoot, as it understands it now. Hence the ques-B ques-B Hon is, why this present simulated indignation B and demand for reform? Is it possible that Sen-B Sen-B ator Kearns is having strained relations with the B church and that his re-election is beginning to B have a doubtful look; that hence word has come B that the Tribune must show Its teeth; that a bull-Mi bull-Mi dozing campaign must be inaugurated and kept up B until the church can be bullied into making an-B an-B other deal? Some good men have been drawn B Into this, but we believe they have been deceived B In regard to the underlying cause of the sudden B outburst. The matter Is under Investigation in B congress. The one thing that has caused dia-B dia-B quietude so far in that investigation is the ab-B ab-B sence of effort to probe the real cause of the B heart burnings here, namely church domination B In political affairs. But in the protest of Monday B night this is all ignored. Why? Is it the purpose B to make a cuttlefish obscuration of the political B situation and to try to lash the. people and the B country into a rage over the old often-time3 B threshed out straw of polygamy? It has that look B and some of the chief movers have political af-B af-B flnities which glvo new tints to that look. B Then there may bo a double cross. "We no-B no-B tlco that two or three very prominent Democrats B have been attending 1 these Indignation meetings B and that the calling together of the. Democratic B state central committee has been postponed. B ABain, the Honorable Michael Tarpey was here a B few days ago. Is this preliminary to a cloud-B cloud-B hurst for Will Randolph Hearst when the Demo-B Demo-B cratic convention Bhall meet; a cloudburst for B "Sarst and a furious anti-polygamy, anti-church B rule, anti-every thing except to win, platform? That is not impossible. Hearst could ' o lose Utah, if in lieu thereof he could hav tSyJ raised in Utah of his horror of polygam. church rule. But when it is all over, whak the nation think of both the Mormons and Q, tiles of Utah? |
