Show A writer in the Argonaut draws such a picture of the misrule that Guatemala has suffered under for the past quarter of a century that, if true, it is a lasting pity that the great soldier and statesman states-man who has redeemed Mexico is not twenty-five years younger and at work in that southern State. It is a picture of rapine and cruelty almost with. out a parallel. There is, however, one statement in the article which casts a doubt upon its perfect reliability It says that the representatives of both Great Britain and the United States are cowed by the despot who is president, and dare not speak their real sentiments above a whisper. This casts a doubt on the whole story. If true not only the despot but the representatives should be disposed of. |
