Show In the delicious opening of Felix Holt a reference refer-ence is made "to men with a considerable bank account" who were accustomed to say "they never meddled with politics themselves." There are a great many of that class of men in America as well as in England, and that is all money. Every citizen of this country ought to be, in a small way, at least, a politician. No business man thinks of trusting his business busi-ness entirely to his clerks, but a great many men in this country are willing to turn dver the handling han-dling of political matters to those who like such . things, knowing all the time that with thousands of those politicians the only interest is the spoils. Our Government rests upon the patriotism and intelligence of the masses of the people; when one class of these become corrupt enough the structure will fall, for rewards and punishments apply as much to Governments as to business. The man who neglects his business fails; the nation that has the boon of absolute freedom will lose the prize unless they guard and protect it. |
