Show VENICE. Is Venice falling in. the sea? Oh town of glorious lore, Your splendors as they used to be Shall we behold no more? If ruthless Time makes this mistake Which ages will regret, We'll turn our hopes unto the lake. We'vo got Chicago yet. In dreamy pictures you've been done Like some transcendent myth By Smith and Jones and Robinson Particularly Smith. And eager poets seem to find Sweet lingering measures set Within thy walls. But never mind; We've got Chicago yet. The lofty pile which scrapes the sky In Illinois we'll rear, And watch the tug its errand play Whit smutted gondolier. T And as for art and literature, ' They'll grow out west, you bet. Though Venice totters Insecure, We've got Chicago yet. -W.ashjngton (D. C.) Star. |
