Show Several Eastern clergymen have expressed the belief recently that the moral standard of the American people is deteriorating. We believe that is true In the man-made cit-ios. cit-ios. We are not sure about the God-made country, coun-try, though a good many farmers put their best apples in the top of the sack and occasionally, accidentally drop a few rocks in the center of the balo of hay. Recently there has been a good deal of talk right here, even where so many saints abound, about short measures, too meager peck measures, under-weight butter pounds and even attenuated strawberry boxes. A good many people peo-ple need, as Victor Hugo would say, to have their consciences operated on for cataract. But after all the real disease is the insatiable desire for wealth among men for wealth and show for wealth among men, for wealth and show among women. This desire dries up the generous instincts, makes men liars, and when the opportunity oppor-tunity presents itself thieves likewise. We fear it will require a great war or pestilence to.shock the people into a desire for more honest lives. |
