Show I BETTER NOT COME. I A dispatch says the Western Federation of Miners has voted to hold their next annual convention, con-vention, in 1905, In Salt Lake City. We are not quite sure that their coming ought to be welcomed. wel-comed. There are many excellent men in the organization, or-ganization, but it was originally organized by men, a majority of whom were determined to be a law unto themselves, and ever since, wherever they have gained any material strength there has first been an uproar and this has been followed by utter lawlessness incendiarism and assassination assassina-tion No decent man desires to see repeated in Utah what has followed the rule of this body in tho Couer d'Alene country, in Montana and Colorado. Whithin the organization is a band of assassins, assass-ins, and while they are protected by the organization, organi-zation, their crimes are reflected back upon the organization itself. Moreover, in the organization the rule utterly ignores the rights of all who do not belong to the union. Its edicts are directly in tho face, of the most necessary and sacred laws of the republic. It denies to the men who pay the members their wages, the right to manage their own property; it denies to men not of their union the right to earn a livelihood, and they back their edicts with dynamite and the torch. They kept Northern Idaho in a state of anarchy an-archy anu fear for years until a resolute executive Put in motion a force that they could not resist, and then they changed their field to Colorado and they have cost the State already many valuable lives, immense losses of property and have made the State a place to be shunned by men who love Peace, order and justice. The miscreant who organized the union in Colorado, some years ago, came to Salt Lake City, and in a speech expressed the hope that he would, More long, see the working men of Utah carry-tag carry-tag guns He was then fresh from the scenes of tacendiarism and murder,- which it la believed ho planned in Northern Idaho. He is still a leader and counselor in the organization. The horrible crime committed at Cripple Creek last Monday morning was but a natural result of his teach-tags teach-tags We do not believe that any decent class of People in Utah desires a repetition In this State f what this organization has caused to transpire in Idaho, Montana and Colorado; we do not believe be-lieve that any great portion of the inhabitants of this State care to have such a body liold a convention con-vention here. It is a clear case that their violent rule is about over in Colorado, and that they are turning longing eyes toward the unlooted field of Utah. They made an attempt last winter, by sending an ex-Italian convict to organize his countrymen coun-trymen into a union in the coal mines of this State. They did not make a great success, but they have not abandoned the belief that Utah might be made a profitable field for them. The above Is not aimed at ordinary labor unions, but only at that one organization which is under the direction and control of men who have given ample proof that they care nothing for just laws or the rights of men, who in truth are enemies of society and should be outlawed. Working men are doing well In Utah; If they desire additional advantages the Legislature of Utah will listen and if their claims are reasonable reason-able will grant them, but this State has no patience pa-tience with men who believe in carrying their points with the torch, with giant powder and secret se-cret and open assassination. |
