Show DU BARRY. Monday seemed to be a day of outrages, and Colorado was not the only state that Suffered D. Belasco hugely asslted by Mrs. L. Caiter ambushed a gullible public Monday night, and after cutting into the bank accounts scandalously proceeded to lacerate the feelings of the victims huddled together in front. Du Barry at Belasco's theater in New York and Du Barry at our own ten-twenty-thirty were two dlfferenjt ladies. So different in fact that a picked jury consisting of a dozen Alan" Dales would be unable to trace the slightest resemblance resem-blance to the original. Du Barry in New York was great, Du Barry in Salt Lake was a cruel Jioax, without a redeeming redeem-ing feature. We must never be so unreasonable as to expect a metropolitan production complete but when most of the scenery is piled in the back yard, when the star wanders through the performance per-formance in a haphazard way .intent only upon rushing through the lines, assisted by a weird group of the hamiest kind of ham-fatters, and the man in the cage says "two bucks for a peep," it is time to protest loud and long. In New York, the last scene alone was worth the money, but the street scene as put on the toy stage at the Grand bore the same resemblance to the original as our own Plum Alley bears to Broadway. And I for one was with the mob, anld the execution couldn't have taken place any to quick to suit me. To make such a scene, once so intense, so tragic, assume the form we saw it take was almost a crime. It was positively ludicrous, a burlesque, and every minute I expected ex-pected to wake from a dream, find myself in the little theater of the Weberfields, and see Lou rise in the cart, and s"y, "Choie come on to de guillotine blace mid vatch de rubber in my neck make a snapping." Time and space and an inefficient vocabulary will not allow a dissection of the company. But Mr. Balasco, when you get another request re-quest to bring your lady friend west, do not misjudge it for a call of the wild. All of the people who enjoy good performances and who happen hap-pen to have a couple of dollars to throw to the winds, do not live between Harlem and the Battel Bat-tel y. t. |
