Panguitch Volunteers Attend Three-Day Training On 'I Can Read9 Program By Nick Reynolds Reading is rocket science! This is what volunteers at Panguitch Elementary discovered discov-ered during a recent three day training. Eight volunteers, including newly elected school board members Mack Oetting and Jeannie Russo-Whalen, were taught by three Panguitch Elementary School staff members mem-bers in preparation for working with students in the schools "I Can Read" lab. This training came about when two parents, Vonnie Parkin and Tammy Houston, came to the school and asked if they could spearhead a search for community members who would be willing to work as volunteers vol-unteers at the school. After meeting with teachers, to get input from them, the two mothers moth-ers went to work and the train ing was set up. The concentrated training took place over three consecutive consecu-tive days. Instructors were Ruth Boshell, "I Can Read" specialist for the school, Marilyn Marshall, literacy coach, and Carol Orton, reading paraprofessional. parapro-fessional. Everyone came away with a new knowledge of reading read-ing instruction in the local schools and with an appreciation of what a difficult task teaching reading can be. In the near future these volunteers vol-unteers will be reading aides at the school during afternoon hours working with individual students to improve important reading skills. This effort, made possible by concerned parents and teachers, is another part of the schools and Garfield School Districts effort to prepare children chil-dren for the future. y I |
