The couple sought to do something beneficial for the people of the area, after Mrs. Zaphi ropoulos received excellent care and medical attention while a patient at the medical facility. They inquired what type of equipment would most benefit clinic or hospital patrons and were told the next item on the wish list (See GIFT on page 9-A) GIFT From Front Page was laproscopic equipment but the cost of that was a phenomenal $35,000. The couple graciously wrote out a check for the entire amount to the Garfield Memorial Health Care Foundation and the important equipment was promptly ordered through that charitable organization. organiza-tion. The laproscopic equipment now enables surgeries such as hernia re-' pairs, gall bladder and appendectomies appendecto-mies to be carried out at Garfield Memorial Hospital and Clinics. Dr. Lynn Rowe travels twice monthly from Richfield to Pan-guitch Pan-guitch for those general surgeries using this advanced technology. In the past, the surgeon would make a long incision for gallbladder surgery, enabling him to see the gallbladder and remove it, an open cholecystectomy. Now the surgeon uses a laparoscopic laparo-scopic technique. Instead of one long incision, the patient has four small incisions less than one inch each. One at the belly button (navel), one in the upper abdomen and two on the right side under the ribs. The surgeon inserts a special scope with lenses and a powerful lieht into the incision at the hellv j button. The scope is attached to a television camera and allows the surgeon to see inside the abdomen on the television screen. Into the other incisions, the surgeon passes small instruments such as forceps and scissors to help remove the gall bladder. The abdomen is inflated with carbon dioxide gas to help the surgeon see better. Special metal clips block off the duct leading from the gall bladder to the bile ducts and the arteries going to the gallbladder. The benefits of laproscopic surgery sur-gery are many, including less pain, a shorter hospital stay (usually one day), earlier return to full activity and work, less pain medication required, re-quired, and less visible abdominal scaring. Garfield County residents are truly thankful and appreciative to folks like Renn and Marie Zaphiro-poulos Zaphiro-poulos of Cedar City for charitable gifts of this magnitude and scope. |
