Behind Patterson are HENRJEVELLE Twenty-seven-year-old Deanna Patterson may be the only lady fire chief in Utah, but right now her principal interest is becoming, along with her small group of volunteer fire fighters, fully certified and well-equipped well-equipped to protect the residents and their homes in this tiny rural Garfield Gar-field County community of fewer than 200 people. Elected chief by her peers in mid-January, Patterson is focusing on certification and equipment that will also help to lower fire insurance rates for everyone in town. They all serve as volunteers. Husband Keith Patterson, who has been certified for the past three years, holds two-hour training sessions on alternate Thursday nights for eight other volunteer fire fighters and two stand-bys. Recently they have been learning to operate the town's fire engine and pump truck, learning to properly hook up hoses, and participate in some class training. Some also participated in Wildland Fire Fighting training offered in late January in seven sessions at Rubys Inn at Bryce, with testing to take place in April. Patterson says she spends a couple of hours a day on paperwork that involves training records, filing, truck inspection records, truck run logs, etc. She will soon be writing grants in hopes of generating more money for needed equipment. They now have turnout gear for volunteers Stacy Chynoweth and Travis Shakespear, and at the fire truck, Jimmy Neil son. All are participating in special training sessions. Henrieville's Volunteer Fire Fighters Take Part In Special Training Sessions 11, one fully tested Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) four that are untested, four SCBA masks. They are in need of more SCBA's and masks and, for Wild-land Wild-land fire fighting, will need special shirts and jackets, backpacks, fire shelters, and pulaskis. Some of the funding for the volunteer fire department comes from the Garfield County Special Fire Service District.
