Show I Area I 1 Obituaries Jay Porter ESCALANTE Vernal Jay Porter, 75, died July 5, 1997 at his home in Escalante. He was born October 30, 1921 in Escalante Esca-lante to Leland and Mary Roe Porter. He was a veteran of WWII. He has been employed as a supervisor su-pervisor with the Bell Telephone Company and worked at Geneva Steel. He also worked construction construc-tion for Lincoln Lyman and Kelly's Construction. Recently he had been a school crossing guard in Escalante. He is survived by brothers and sisters: Edith (Richard) Sharp, Bountiful; Leah (DeLane) Griffin, Escalante; Budd (Aloha). Porter of Provo; Berniece Losee of Spanish Fork; V. Ben (Rene) Porter of Escalante; numerous nieces and nephews who loved him. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Burr Porter; sister Jackie Laine Griggs; brother-in-law Owen G. Losee. Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 9 at the Escalante Esca-lante 2nd Ward Chapel, with Bishop Clem Griffin officiating. The family prayer was offered by a brother, Budd Porter and prelude and postlude music was played by a niece, Susan Porter. The invocation was given by Michael Losee, a nephew, and a vocal selection, "Count Your Many Blessings," was sung by nephews, and accompanied by Susan Porter. Ann Haws, a niece, gave a tribute, and the congregation sang, "Because I Have Been Given Much," accompanied by Susan Porter, and directed by Rene'e Porter. Nephew Quinn Griffin gave a speech, remarks were made by Bishop Clem Griffin, Grif-fin, and a vocal selection was sung by DeLane, Lynn, and Gene Griffin, "The Escalante Song," and "I'll Miss You When You're Gone." The benediction was offered of-fered by a sister, Leah Griffin. Pallbearers were Scott Sharp, Coy Porter, Bryce Porter, Quinn Griffin, Gene Griffin, Mike Losee, Cornell Porter, and Shannon Steed. Honorary pallbearers were all nieces, nephews, and the Escalante Esca-lante Elementary school children. Burial was in the Escalante Cemetery with military rites performed per-formed by the American Legion Post 114. The dedication of the grave was offered by V. Ben Porter, Por-ter, a brother.
