Show Annual Law Enforcement Torch Run Set For Today The annual statewide 1997 Law Enforcement Torch to raise money for and promote the awareness aware-ness of Utah Special Olympics is set for today in Garfield County with runners starting in Escalante and running in each of the county's three main areas. Last year's event in the county raised more than $2,000 making Garfield County one of the top fund-raisers per capita in the state. As a result, the county's name appears with the names of the other four winners on this year's T-shirt, available for only $12 from law enforcement perso-nel perso-nel and Torch Ruun organizers. Also available are hats at $8 and pins at $5. Garfield County Sheriffs Deputy Monte Luker is spearheading spear-heading the effort for the second year in a row. He can be reached at 801-826-4545 and he urges everyone in Escalante to come out for the run. Walkers are also encouraged to do their thing for Utah Special Olympics, Luker said. Law enforcement personnel, joined by supporting volunteers, will begin the run at noon in Escalante and pick up more supporters in Tropic at 2 p.m. The final run will be in Panguitch starting at 4 p.m. In Tropic, Keith and Deanna Patterson are lending a helping hand to make the Torch Run the same success it was last year or better. In Panguitch, Carla Owens is at the helm and likewise is depending upon volunteers to assist. After the run, Torch Run participants will be treated to Burger King hamburgers from Burger King in Beaver at Panguitch Pan-guitch City Park. Utah Special Olympics is an internationally recognized and fully sanctioned sports and training program for children and adults with mental retardation. The program is founded on the belief that athletes with mental retardation can, with proper instructions and encouragement, learn, enjoy and excel from participation in individual and team sports. |
