(;.,...-... f . f J The Panguitch High School girls basketball team took first ontheir home floor at the 1-A Region 15 Girls Basketball tournament held last weekend in Panguitch. Those participating were: back row, left to right, Camille Christensen, Lisa By John Yardley : The Panguitch High School girls basketball team won the region re-gion championship Saturday night with a 52-40 victory over the Wayne Badgers. It was the first region tournament held in many years for the girls and the Bobcats won the top trophy on . their home floor. The Bobcats blew out to a 14-4 lead in the first quarter behind a stifling zone defense that led to several easy baskets. Lisa Duff, Camile Christensen, Ronda Hatch, Pepper Hatch and Maxi Miller all combined to make a great defensive effort. With foul problems, three freshman came off the bench during Duff, Ashley Orton, and Maxi Miller; middle row: Coach Jenny Poll, Ronda Hatch, Pepper Hatch, Laura Boshell, and Coach Curtis Bamey; front row: Shelly Hatch, Holly Talbot, Lacee Leach, Kali Moore, and Alison Yardley. Panguitch Girls Win Remon Title crunch time to also assist coach Curtis Barney and the team cause. Freshman players Shelly Hatch, Lacee Leach and Alison Yardley all contributed. Christensen was the leading scorer with 17, Duff hit 14, Pepper Hatch 10, Miller 4, Ronda Hatch 2, Shelly Hatch 2, Leach 2 and Yardley 1. Panguitch overcame a 21 -point performance by Wayne all-star Kalli Taylor who bombed in five three-pointers in trying to rally her team back into the game. Panguitch High School led 21-16 21-16 at the half, before Wayne coach Heidi Woolsey's girls cut it to three at 21-18, but the Bobcat defense again took over and the girls never looked back. The Bobcats now open the State tournament this week in Price as the top team from Region 15. Christensen was the steals leader for the tournament. In other final day games, Escalante Esca-lante won fifth place, defeating Mil-ford Mil-ford 44-33. Angie Alvey's Moquis will also advance to the finals in Price. Jamie Lyman led the scoring with 16, Brittany Sanderfer added 9, Kristy Townsend 8, Sarah Rollins 7 and Becky Crawford 2. Rollins was the top assist person in the tournament. Piute beat Valley 46-35 46-35 for third and fourth. (See SPORTS on page 7-A) Sports From Front Page themselves, Milford and Panguitch for third place in the region. In earlier tournament games, Panguitch defeated Wasatch Academy Acad-emy 69-16 on the first day of play. Pepper Hatch nailed 17 points, Lisa Duff 13, Camile Christensen 12 and Ronda Hatch 10 for the Bobcats. Bob-cats. The second day, the Bobcats beat Piute 50-28. Pepper Hatch was again the leading scorer with 16 with Christensen and duff each scoring 11. Escalante lost 38-30 to Piute the first day. The Moquis could not i buy a hoop in the early going. Sandefer scored 11 and Lyman 10. The second day, the Moquis beat Wasatch Academy 57-38. Sandefer bombed away with 24, Lyman 14 and Crawford 8 to lead the way. Bryce Valley and coach Brady Syrett played a tough press on Wayne the first day before losing 63-21. Amy Johnson scored 7 and Jodi Shakespear 6. The second day, BV lost 39-29 to Milford. Esther Johnson hit for 8, Amy Johnson 8, Sheena Clark 8 and Bonnie Stewart 5 in a real nice effort for the Mustangs. |
