Show It Makes Cents By VI JUDGE BLAKE 1 Today I saw a gardener strap expensive-looking knee pads to his legs in preparation for some kneeling work he had to do. This reminded me of the pockets I used to sew on that area of my mechanic son's work pants to hold foam carpet padding cut to fit. This afforded no-cost protection for his knees. So, why haven't I stitched pockets to my gardening pants? I think I'll go and do so right now. Funny, isn't it, how sometimes we do something that works well for awhile then quit doing it? Like using bluing in the rinse water to brighten white linens and clothing. cloth-ing. I'm not even sure you can buy it now. Scraps of foam padding, by the way, make the warmest and best ever insoles for leather work boots. Something to remember when winter comes. But why wait? Why not do it now to be ready for cold weather? Which reminds me: We need some eyeglass cleaner in the truck. So why don't I go right now and put some there before I forget again? Rubbing alcohol, by the way, serves as well as commercial commer-cial eyeglass cleaners, and the cost is negligible. Keep a small stainless steel bowl in the freezer to use when you want to quickly chill some milk, cream or other liquid, Actually, Actu-ally, when you plan to whip cream, it's a good idea to also chill the beaters you'll be using. Does your husband procrastinate procras-tinate repair jobs around the house? One way to break him of this habit is to have all the tools and supplies assembled before you ask him. I don't suppose all men are this way, but I've known quite a few who will drive to several stores or supply houses to find what they need rather than pick up the phone and make a few calls. Yet the telephone can save time and fuel and trips to the store. So can planning ahead to do a number of errands at once such as going to the bank, post office, grocery store, picking up dry cleaning, dropping someone off at a ball game, etc. Planning ahead also makes housework easier. When you take out the garbage can or dumpster, for example, use that trip to pick up the mail and also toys and trash the children have left in the driveway. Leave upstairs items on the stairway to take up as you go. As you walk through the house, watch for things that are out of place and take them with you when you're headed their way. In other words, let your head save your heels, as my wise mother used to say. Dear Vi: The warming plate of an electric coffee brewer is a good low energy place to melt butter without burning it. Safer, too, than melting it on the stove in a small saucepan. I store paper bags this way: Stretch half inch elastic (Strong elastic from the top of panty hose will do.) to the side of a kitchen cabinet and put tacks where needed to make spaces for each size bag.
