Show It MaHfes Cents ) -ii By Vi Judge Blake Dear Vi: We mix coffee grounds, tea bags, and eggshells into the ground around our rosebushes, azaleas, and other acid-loving acid-loving plants. When we have vegetable and fruit peelings, we blend them with water in the blender. This also makes a potent free fertilizer. We spray rose bushes and flowering plants with this homemade antifungal spray: 1 Tbsp each baking soda, vegetable oil; and Epsom salts, and one tsp liquid soap in one gallon of water. It's important to spray both sides of the . leaves and to repeat every ten days. We let banana skins ferment in a sealed jar for a couple of weeks and spray this directly on our rosebushes. Roses thrive on this. You guessed it: We prefer the natural way instead of poisonous chemicals. Roger Beamont Dear Vi: I have quite a collection of clip-on earrings that I no longer wear because of pierced ears. Not wanting to discard them, I use them them to clip menus, notes to family members, and other important reminders to my bulletin board. Now that we have a newly remodeled kitchen, I decided to discard all of our old tired, faded dishtowels, pot holders, and dish cloths. New towels and such make a kitchen look clean and lovely. Oops, I lied. I didn't really discard the old towels. Too frugal for that, I still use. them, but I never hang them where they will be seen. Ida Mueller DearVi: I use magnets to hang my weekly meal plans on the side of the refrigerator. This reminds me to buy the needed ingredients when I do my shopping. I also tape measuring equivalents, recipes to try, frequently-used recipes (biscuits, pie crust, muffin, pancakes, etc.) to the inside of cupboard doors. Freda Dillingham Great filing cabinets, the insides of cupboard doors!. I also attach pictures of my loved ones there so I'll see them often. And what a help to have a list of what's stored in those high, high cupboards taped on the inside of the cupboard door beneath them. Dear Vi: We bought some TV trays at a garage sale (the stackable kind) and converted them to personal blackboards for our grandchildren by painting them with a blackboard or slate paint. The kids love them. They pull them over their laps and write away to their hearts content. Although we didn't intend to use them for their original purpose, the dull black color matched our modernistic furniture so well that we use them all the time. "Two birds with one stone. "- Nila Arsingdale, St. George, Ut Dear Vi: When you give an oversized gift, instead of struggling to wrap it with expensive wrapping paper taped together, use a paper tablecloth. They come in all sorts of cute designs. For example, I gave my best friend a highchair for her first baby. The paper tablecloth I chose for its wrapping was printed with teddy bears. What wrapping could have been more appropriate. My daughter and her husband cherish the Christmas gift we gave them; it was her wedding bouquet, dried, and encased in one of those plastic ornaments that snap open and closed with red velvet ribbon tied around it. .
