Show PHS Girls Win Sophomore Tourney By John Yardley The Panguitch girls won the Sophomore Tournament Saturday night in a thrilling overtime with Wayne 52-47. Scott Christensen coached PHS to three wins in capturing first place against Heidi Woolsey and her well-coached girls from Wayne. Panguitch was led by freshman Camile Christensen with 18 and Lisa Duff with 16. Both girls were named to the All-Tournament team. Brittany Sandefer was an outstanding outstand-ing player for the All-Tournament team in Escalante. The Moqui girls played for consolation championship. champion-ship. , In boys play, Panguitch improved im-proved to 1 1-1 with wins over Mil-ford Mil-ford 65-52 and Bryce Valley 69-43. Escalante lost to Valley in a close one 54-46 and lost to Piute 68-48. Bryce Valley played one of their best games of the season before losing to Wayne 63-59. In varsity girls games, Valley defeated Panguitch Pan-guitch at Valley 56-42. Milford had given the Bobcats their only loss of the season at Mil-ford Mil-ford and the PHS boys seemed ready for the rematch. Panguitch went out to a 23-4 first-quarter lead, only to see the Tigers take a 26-25 half-, time lead! The Bobcats regained their composure and went on to win 65-52. The inside combo of Sonny Orton 16, and Henry James 14, scored down the stretch in the clutch. Nice passing and good defense de-fense helped, too. Nate Moore was perfect from the field and the line for 12 points. Bryce Valley held a 12 point lead 40-28 at the half against Wayne, but the Badgers, a tough team, rallied back to win 63-59. It was a strong outing, but a disappointing disap-pointing loss for first year coach Steve Hatch, who is working hard to develop his team. John Shakespear pumped in 18 and Britt Twitchell nailed 11 for the Mustangs. Mus-tangs. On Saturday, PHS jumped out to a big lead over BV using a stifling sti-fling press defense to win 69-43. Nate Moore was like lightning moving among the big men for 19 points. Mayo Miller chipped in with 13. It was another team win for Scott Hunt and Arlin Sawyer's boys with solid defense and selfless passing. John Shakespear scored 7 and Lance Foster 6 for the Mustangs. Mus-tangs. Escalante cut the Valley lead to two at 34-32 after three quarters at Orderville, before falling 54-46. The Moquis were forced to foul down the stretch. Dustin Shakespear drained 17 points while Jared Smith and Ryan Cottam each scored 10. It was a game of "almosts" for Jim Smith's team. The Moquis can play with anyone on a given night. Piute caught Escalante by surprise and beat them by nearly 10 in the first and fourth quarters to win 68-48. This weekend Escalante hosts Wayne on Friday and then the Mo-quis Mo-quis and Mustangs have a big shoot-out in Tropic on Saturday. BV travels to Wasatch on Friday. Panguitch has their biggest weekend week-end of the season as they host Piute on Friday and play at Valley on Saturday. The Valley game can be heard on KMXU FM. Panguitch girls host Wayne this week to decide second place. In the loss at Valley, Camille Christensen hit for 19, Rhonda Hatch nailed 12 and Joni Burning-ham Burning-ham scored 10. |
